1. Make a fresh cut. Cut about ½ inch straight across the base of the trunk before you put the tree in its stand.
  2. Use a big enough stand. Choose one that holds at least 1 gallon of water.
  3. Water often. Expect your tree to drink about a gallon in the first 24 hours, then about a quart a day. Check the stand often and keep it full.
  4. Skip the additives. Plain fresh water is all your tree needs.
  5. Keep it away from heat. Place it away from vents, fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators, and sunny windows.
  6. Be careful with lights. Don't overload circuits, and turn the tree lights off before you leave home or go to bed.
